More than 1800 karting enthusiasts, from around the country, entered the event during the qualification period. The top 30 participants met at Kyalami Race Track on Saturday 11 May 2013 to battle it out for the coveted first place.

In a fiercely contested final, Zahir Phillips from Cape Town emerged victorious, edging out Kuda Vazhure from Johannesburg in the final lap to claim the Red Bull Kart Fight title. Yaseen Rhode, also from Cape Town, finished hot on their heels in 3dr position.

A visibly emotional Zahir was overjoyed “The experience was out of this world. It was pretty tough going into a race not knowing what the kart would be like, but the track was amazing! The curves and apexes of the track were so different – a great overall experience. Today I just wanted to try my best and stay focused. That’s what I’ll do in the World Final – try my best and give it my all.”

F1 Guru Sasha Martinengo was on hand to lend his voice to the proceedings and was impressed with not only the depth of karting talent, but also how seriously the participants took the competition. “The Red Bull Kart Fight today at Kyalami has been something exceptional – a lot of fun, but also a lot of competitiveness between the karters. Hopefully this inspires more youngsters and amateur racers to get involved in some kind of motorsport. I am sure Zahir will do us proud in the World Final.”

Zahir will represent South Africa at the Red Bull Kart Fight World Final later in the year.

The Red Bull Kart Fight is a global competition to determine the fastest amateur kart racer in the World of Red Bull. National competitions in 20 countries around the planet search for the best racers to represent each country and those winners then travel to the Red Bull Kart Fight World Final. Participating in the World Final is as close as an amateur racer can get to the feel of being a top international star. Although he conjured up the idea two years ago, the actual shoot took months of planning.

Leander Lacey, well-known stuntman and stunt coordinator for the shoot, explained the intricacies of arranging the shoot: “The most difficult thing about the shoot was making sure that the containers maintained a consistent position and were stable so not to rock while he was in action.”

Two 12-metre containers were suspended above the yard in Culemborg on Cape Town’s Foreshore, three metres apart. Though most skaters land gaps like that daily, they don’t it suspended 10 metres in the air.

“I’m still pumped on adrenaline! It’s by far the craziest thing I’ve ever done,” Jean-Marc said after the gap jump. “To be honest, I really thought it would be easier but once you’re up there it’s pretty scary. I’m so stoked it happened.”

I shot the main image with a Nikon D4 and 16mm fish eye, the right container had an Elinchrom Qudra Ranger set up with a Pocket Wizard Plus 111 as the main light source, the container on the left had a Nikon SB 900 also with a Pocket Wizard Plus 111 just as filler from the back. Although I was pretty far away and had the Pocket Wizards in the container we still had no problems with them triggering.

One of the first pics using the Quadra Rangers while the sun was still up

As the sun set and the dark clouds rolled in the Quadras came to life.

This we used 2 Elinchrom Quadras to light up Nick and a Nikon SB 900 Speedlight to light up the ramp, The Quadras were set to full power and were triggered with Pocket Wizard Plus 111s.
